Trojans Continue Work Toward 2011 Season

Cary-Grove played Prairie Ridge, West Chicago, North Chicago in drills Thursday

The 2011 football season is just more than a month away, and the Cary-Grove Trojans are continuing their summer workouts. Thursday, the team participated in 7-on-7 drills with Prairie Ridge, West Chicago and North Chicago. Each session lasted an hour, with each team getting to run 12 plays on offense, with extra plays added if time permitted. The teams did not keep score.

The Trojans also played with a heavy heart Thursday night as many seniors left after the second game of the evening to attend the wake for the mother of senior Trevor Loew, who passed away this week after a four-year battle with cancer. Cary-Grove coach Brad Seaburg said members of the team are doing their best to help.

“They are dealing with it well. They raised some money for some flowers and some donations for the family,” Seaburg said. “They are all pretty tight, the senior class is. They are dealing with it like teenagers do. They move on pretty quickly and adapt pretty quickly, but we didn’t really make it a point of emphasis for tonight.”

As the summer has worn on, Seaburg added that the team continues to work on general improvement as the season draws near.

“We’re improving every day and trying to get our kids to play fast, trying to get them to know where to go,” Seaburg said. “Every day we get better and start to look lower. Things are looking good.”

The season opens Aug. 26 at St. Charles North, and Seaburg said that all this summer work is leading up to that first game. Many of last year’s players are returning this season.

“More than anything, it gets us started quicker,” Seaburg said. “We have really picked up and the seniors and juniors who were around last year, that year of experience really helped them and helped them retain a lot of the knowledge from last year and allowed us to get started pretty quickly.”

The first practice for the new season is only 33 days away on Aug. 10.
