'Tour de Crystal Lake' Delivers Cycling Excitement

First-ever race for Crystal Lake was packed with plenty of excitement and competition, but was low on spectators.

The "Tour de Crystal Lake" delivered plenty of racing action on Sunday in downtown Crystal Lake.

Serving as one of several venues for the Prairie State Cycling Series, which runs during a two-week period in July, the streets in the older part of the city were transformed into a racing route just under one mile long.

The event, sponsored in part by the McHenry County Convention and Visitors Bureau, was enhanced by family activities provided by the Crystal Lake Park District, an "Art of the Bike" exhibit at the Raue Center for the Arts and beer garden with live entertainment at The Cottage.

Despite its unique appeal, only a small crowd of spectators showed during the mid-day hours to watch the racing, which started at 9 a.m. and continued until 6 p.m.

Some downtown businesses opted to close for the day since Williams Street was closed to thru-traffic and parking.
