This Week in Cary-Grove Athletics

A look back at the last seven days for the Trojans.

With the regular season winding down in baseball and softball and other sports in their postseason or even concluding, here’s a look at what happened over the last seven days….

Cary’s softball team took home a 3-0 win on Monday at home against Crystal Lake South behind a shutout from Lindsay Efflandt.

Efflandt struck out six as the Trojans scored two of their three runs on wild pitches. C-G added a 9-5 win on Tuesday against Dundee-Crown as Emma Gaulke pitched six innings to get the win and Sarah Leudo homered to lead the Cary attack. On Wednesday, the Trojans added another 9-5 win over Jacobs to finish division play undefeated.

Efflandt homered and Leudo had three hits to pace Cary. The Trojans finished their week Friday with a 3-0 win over Grayslake North. Gaulke had two hits for Cary, who are 26-1 heading into their final regular season game Monday against Marengo and the McHenry Regional follows later in the week.

The Cary-Grove baseball team started strong with a 20-3 win at Woodstock Monday including an 11-run first inning. Matt Panek had four hits including a home run and four RBIs as six Trojans had two hits or more and five scored twice or more.

On Tuesday, Cary defeated Woodstock North 14-0 as Tyler Lau and Danny Leisten each had two hits and two RBIs for the Trojans. C-G added a 13-0 win over Woodstock North on Thursday as Michael Vilardo, Alex Wians, Quinn Kauss and Panek each had two RBIs.

The Trojans finished their week Saturday with a 4-3 non-conference loss at Stevenson in eight innings. Kevin Weber homered for the Trojans, who come into this week at 23-9 overall.

The Trojans girls’ soccer team saw their 2011 season end Wednesday night at the Class 3A Barrington Regional with a 1-0 loss to Jacobs.

Krystal Felderman made seven saves for Cary. C-G’s boys’ tennis team was at the Cary-Grove Regional this weekend as Chris Federighi won the singles sectional title and advanced to this week’s state meet as the lone Cary representative.

Mike Barrett and Mike Scott advanced to the sectional quarterfinals for Cary.

The boys track team qualified in five events for the state meet at Eastern Illinois University in the Class 3A Rockford Guilford Regional on Friday.

Anthony Golowach and Josh Freeman each qualified in two events with Golowach making it in the high jump and 400 meters while Freeman advanced in the discus and shot put. The Cary 4x400 relay team also advanced for next weekend.

The girls state track meet was this weekend at EIU with Carly Loeffel winning a state title in the high jump. Loeffel jumped 5-8 in the final, winning the competition by two inches.
