The Week in Cary-Grove Athletics

A look back at what happened this week for the Trojans.

After a rainy beginning of the week that cancelled all Cary-Grove athletics on Monday and Tuesday, a look at what happened during Cary’s three days of competition this week…

C-G’s baseball team started the week with a 5-1 win at Prairie Ridge as Matt Panek had four RBIs including a three-run homer.

John Spoelstra threw a complete-game three-hitter to get the win. Cary added a 9-2 win on Thursday behind a three-run homer from Michael Vilardo.

On Saturday, Vilardo put together a day for the ages in a doubleheader against McHenry. Vilardo homered three times and had 12 RBIs as Cary lost both games to the Warriors, losing game one 19-18 and game two 7-3 to fall to 10-6 overall and 7-3 in the FVC Valley.

Cary’s softball team won their opener 17-0 at Woodstock as struck out 12 and added a home run and five RBIs. Eleni Polites and Lisa Semro each added three RBIs in the win.

The Trojans added a 3-2 win over Lake Zurich on Thursday on a three-run double by .

C-G finished the week with a 9-3 win against Crystal Lake South led by a grand slam by Sara Markelonis to improve to 13-1 overall and 4-0 in the FVC.

The Trojan boys’ tennis team began with a 4-3 win over Lake Zurich as Cary swept all three singles matches by , Owen Russell and Michael Robinson.

On Saturday at the Mundelein Duals, Cary went 4-0 with wins over Mundelein, Zion-Benton, Nazareth and Wheeling. Federighi won all four of his matches at No. 1 singles and Mike Barrett and Mike Scott won their matches at No. 2 doubles.

Cary’s girls’ soccer team played their lone game of the week Thursday with a 8-0 win at Crystal Lake Central as Korey Kronforst scored four times.

This week is the McHenry County Meet for boys and girls track and on the boys’ side, Josh Freeman continued his winning ways in the shot put and discus with wins in both events. Anthony Golowach won the 400 meters for Cary.

On the girls’ side, the Trojans’ 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams each won county title while Kathie Wollney won the 100 high and 300 low hurdles and Sarah Ryan won the 100 and 200 meters along with the relay titles with Wollney.
