The Week in Cary-Grove Athletics

A look at what happened in Trojans sports during the past week

A busy week of games that got cut short at the end due to the unpredictable spring weather, here is what happened....

Cary-Grove’s baseball team got off to a rough start to the week with their first Fox Valley Conference loss of the season, 7-6 to Crystal Lake South on Tuesday even with a Mike Vilardo two-run homer pacing the Trojans'.

Cary rebounded from that defeat against the Gators on Thursday, rallying from a two-run deficit to win 6-3 as Nick Taylor had three hits and knocked in three runs. C-G will go into next week’s action at 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the Fox Valley Conference.

Cary’s softball team started their week and their Fox Valley Conference season with a 5-1 win against Huntley as Emma Gaulke continued her hot streak at the plate with a two-run homer in the first inning to lead Cary.

The Trojans' added a 6-2 win at Jacobs on Tuesday with three C-G players having two hits. The bats really came to play on Wednesday as Cary pounded out 23 hits in a 17-1 win at McHenry as Gaulke and Alexis Haley each had four hits and eight different Trojans had RBIs.

The Trojans' are now 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the FVC.

C-G’s boys’ tennis team began their week with a strong 7-0 Fox Valley Conference win against Johnsburg but fell on Tuesday to Prairie Ridge 5-2 as continued his strong start with wins at No. 1 singles in both matches.

Cary fell for the second time on the week Thursday with a 5-2 loss to Grayslake Central as the Trojans fell to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the FVC.

Cary’s girls’ soccer team went under the lights for the first time Tuesday night for a FVC game against Prairie Ridge. Korey Kronforst scored in the second overtime to give Cary a 1-0 win.

On Friday night, the Trojans' played another 1-0 game but came away with a loss at Grayslake Central and added a 2-2 tie at Rockford Boylan on Saturday with goals by Beth Hughes and Lauren Harte.

The Trojans' head into this week with a 7-6-1 record.

The Cary boys track team finished second on Monday at the Huntley Triangular as Anthony Golowach took four events (high jump and 100, 200 and 400 meters) while the girls track team won the McHenry Triangular over McHenry and Woodstock.

Kathie Wollney won the 100 high hurdles and 300 low hurdles for the Trojans.

Wollney added wins in both 100 and 300 hurdles Friday at the Naperville North Relays along with helping Cary win two relays.

Much of the Cary’s sports schedule was wiped out on Friday and Saturday with baseball games against McHenry and softball games against Crystal Lake South and Fremd washed out due to rain.
