Recapping the South Shootout

Cary completes summer schedule, looks ahead to winter.

It was a long weekend for Cary-Grove’s boys basketball team, playing seven one-hour games in the span of just 26 hours, with the Trojans going 4-3 overall while falling in the consolation championship game at the Crystal Lake South Shootout.

The tournament ended the summer schedule for Cary, which will head back to the court in early November to begin the 2011-12 season.

During Saturday’s last two games, Cary made 13 three-pointers in advancing past Prairie Ridge before losing to Rockford Jefferson. Cary coach Ralph Schuetzle said that it is something that’s part of the game and why Jefferson took advantage early Saturday evening.

“It’s part of the offense, but we got to attack the basket a little bit better,” Schuetzle said. “That’s the reason why they got ahead of us is because they had someone who could shoot some threes. That’s a part of the game, and we got some guys who can shoot it, and if they are not going to guard you out there, you got to be able to shoot it. It is still the No. One skill in the game.”

Schuetzle added that the team will benefit from not playing multiple games each day.

“With a lot of new stuff offensively, they got down and competed. We just got to hang together. We know that we can be successful,” Schuetzle said. “We just got to put it all together now, get everybody healthy and we only play one game a day now. That’s all we got to do now instead of four games. It’s one game now, and I think that’s going to help with Ben (Bradshaw) and Eric (Graham) and get our top eight, nine guys rolling and that’s going to help our team out.”

The 2011-12 season will get under way on Nov. 21 in the Hoops for Healing Tournament.
