MCC Notes: Women A County-wide Group, Men Finding Balanced Scoring

MCC hosts Lake County Thursday night and Elgin Saturday afternoon

College provides the opportunity for players from different schools to come together as one for the first time in their careers.

For McHenry County College’s women’s basketball team, it is all about playing for the county with all of the Scots coming from McHenry County high schools.

Coach Pam Mason said that there are a lot of good players in McHenry County but some have not got the oppournity to play and her team is a classic example of what can be done with players who didn’t get much playing time in high school.

“The county has a lot of girls who can play basketball and have the potential to go on and play college basketball,” Mason said. “With this team, a lot of the girls were on the team in high school but didn’t play.  That’s the battle I fight, they sat on the bench in high school, didn’t score and didn’t get to participate. Then they come home and I have to build their confidence and then they find out that ‘yeah, I am a basketball player’, we’ve got quite a few kids get recruited and go on to four-year schools so the potential is there.”

MCC’s games at Moraine Valley Tuesday night was cancelled due to the weather and the Scots are scheduled to host the College of Lake County Thursday night with the men’s game starting at 5:25 p.m. and the women following around 7:15 p.m.

Finding Some Balance:

The team’s scoring has been balanced around ten points a game before the Scots put up 89 points in a 99-89 loss last Thursday night to Morton including 28 points from sophomore Will Bush. Coach Jason Robinson said it’s been a main group of guys doing the scoring this year.

“Our scoring has been three or four guys all year long balanced and the guys know that so they do a good job setting each other up,” Robinson said.
Robinson added after last Thursday night’s loss to Morton College that two of his newest players have been performing well lately.

“Brandon McBryde, who we picked up at break and Jacob Tonkin really worked their tails off and played hard and physical,” Robinson said. “They have been a bright spot for us and I’m glad we were able to pick them up.”

The Scots will continue their home schedule Saturday afternoon with the men playing at around 3 p.m. after the women’s game, which begins at 1 p.m.

Warmer Days Ahead: As the area digs out from nearly two feet of snow, the thought of baseball may be far off but MCC’s baseball team will begin their 2011 season Feb. 18 in Jackson, Tenn., playing a five-game series over the weekend of Feb. 18-20. Just a reminder that spring is on the way while it may not look that way now.
