MCC Hoops: Men Look for Two Straight, Women Search for Win

The men ended November on a high note while the women's team is still winless.

As the month of December opens today, here’s the latest look at basketball teams….

Men’s Basketball:

The Scots closed play for the month of November with an 88-83 win over Illinois Valley Community College to break the team’s three-game losing streak. Mershon Wilkes led MCC in the win over Illinois Valley with 22 points and leads the team in scoring at 17.3 points per game while LeBarron Hull is averaging 15.7 PPG.

The Scots (4-3) will host Harper College (5-2) at 7:15 p.m. tonight (Dec. 1) before hosting Joliet Junior College Tuesday night in a tough test for MCC. Joliet (5-1) finished seventh in the nation last season in Division III after winning the national championship in 2010.

Coach Jason Robinson said that it will be a test for his team against a very quality opponent.

“I got them on the schedule for that reason because they are nationally-ranked and got away from playing the four-year schools,” Robinson said. “We said if we want to make that next step and get to the next level, this is the type of competition we need to play.”

Through their first six games, Joliet is averaging nearly 92 points a game while MCC has averaged just over 83 points a game in their first seven contests.

Women’s Basketball:

MCC fell to 0-7 on the year with a 95-40 loss to Illinois Valley at home. Alyssa Haayer scored 14 points and had 14 rebounds as one of the lone bright spots for the Scots on the night.

MCC will have another chance for their first win of the year tonight (Dec. 1) at home against Harper College and will play Joliet (3-4) Dec. 6 to continue a stretch of six straight home games.

Joliet advanced to the national tournament last season. Thursday’s game features two winless teams as Harper comes in at 0-5 on the season after losing 89-21 to Malcolm X College on Tuesday.
