MCC Basketball Teams Face Tough Tests Before Holiday

Both teams face St. Clair and Blackhawk next week.

It was a light week for ’s basketball teams with finals going on, however a look now on the Scots’ previous game and a look ahead to this week’s home games.

Men’s Basketball

MCC lost their lone game of the week to Wright College 68-64 after rallying from 21 points behind to make a game of it. Four Scots were in double figures led by 17 from Mershon Wilkes. Wilkes remains one of the top scorers in Region IV, averaging 15.5 points per game while also leading the team in assists averaging 4.3 per contest.

Jermarkus Lovett is behind Wilkes in assists, averaging 3.4 a game. The Scots have four players averaging double figures now with Wilkes, LeBarron Hull, Jemell Kent and DeShawn Wash. Wash is among the region leaders in field goal percentage at 58 percent.

The loss to Wright dropped MCC to 5-5 on the season and now MCC will look for two wins before the holiday as St. Clair County (MI), comes to Tartan Gym at 2 p.m. Saturday with a 5-4 record before Blackhawk College (4-6) plays in Crystal Lake at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Women’s Basketball

The Scots won their second game of the season with a 61-56 win over Wright last Thursday. Alyssa Haayer led MCC, who improved to 2-8 with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Haayer is averaging 17 points and 13 rebounds per game as the team’s lone sophomore.

Haayer is eighth in Region IV in scoring and is leading the district in rebounding.

Chrishaya Dixon is eighth in the region in assists at three a game.

The team will face tough tests from St. Clair County (5-6) noon on Saturday and Blackhawk (6-5) at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday.
