Martin No-Hits DC While Wolves, Tigers Struggle

CLS no-hitter is the highlight of the spring season.

The funny thing is he didn't even know he had a no-hitter until the game was over.

Now that 's Nick Martin has his no-hitter in the books, the junior can reflect what happened in the 7-0 win over Dundee-Crown last week.

He recalled the first batter he faced. That was a shot off the bat of the leadoff hitter. Chris Morrison did the honors in right field when he dove for the ball.

And Martin will also look back at the twin killing that closed his masterpiece. It was a ground ball to shortstop Tyler Salm that second baseman Chris Hauser tossed to first for the game's final out.

"My two-seam was moving a lot,'' Martin said. "And my curve ball kept dropping."

Martin noted the cold and windy conditions kept the crowd down. Only a few dedicated parents were around to see this gem.

Of course CL South (5-3, 9-4) coach Brian Bodga was one witness.

"His fastball was electric,'' Bogda said. "His two-seam was moving a ton. I was very excited to see how Nick pounded the strike zone."

Officially Martin threw 78 pitches and struck out eight while walking two.

"He had a couple of previous outings that he deserved to win,'' Bogda said. "So I was very happy for him to get a special victory like this against a very good hitting team.''

The team's offense took care of business so Martin could concentrate on his pitching.

Hauser had two singles, a double and drove in two runs. Big Max Meitzler cracked a homer and double. Salm added two hits and stole a pair of bases.

"I got a lot of insurance runs from the team,'' Martin said.

Martin, who also tossed a n0-hitter when he was 12 years old, noted he wasn't mobbed by his teammates.

"I got some hand shakes,'' he said.

Naturally, no-hit pitchers get to dine at fancy establishments. Well at least in most cases.

"My parents had a pizza for me,'' Martin said.
