Looking Back at Boys' Basketball 2010-11

Trojans struggle through 12-16 season, work begins for next season

After a Fox Valley Conference championship during the 2009-10 season and having five senior starters, big things were expected for Cary-Grove boys’ basketball team in the 2010-11 campaign.

While the season didn’t go as well as hoped as the Trojans finished with a 12-16 record and a loss in the regional semifinals, coach Ralph Schuetzle said that the team was competitive almost every game.

“Our schedule was tougher this season, we had some teams drop us so we had to go out and get a team like Rockford Jefferson,” Schuetzle said. “It’s just how it goes, we had a losing record but I felt that there were only one or two games that we lost that we didn’t have a chance of winning so we could have had a .500 year at best really. The kids worked hard and the coaching staff put the best game plan out there each game, there are just teams that are better than you and you do the best you can with what you got.”

Nick Richter led the Trojans in scoring at just under 15 points per game while Jon Guay averaged around 8.5 PPG.

Guay said that it was an up and down ride.

“We went through a lot of changes this season with the offense and defense, trying to figure what our identity was,” Guay said. “Towards the end, we started to find that and starting building and were feeling confident. We had a good run at Huntley but fell apart in the end.”

With Richter, Guay, Matt Aulert, Ryan Anderson and Alex Posey all graduating, there will have to be some new leaders come next season.

Schuetzle added that there is one player in particular who will be looked at a lot going into next year.

“There’s not a lot of experience. We didn’t get a whole lot of contributions from our juniors but they were in practice everyday and will be seniors,” Schuetzle said. “They know our system. (Alex) Crowley will have to be a big part of what we do next year and his development. We’ll just kind of take it from there.”

The 2011-12 season gets underway on Nov. 21.
