Lady Scots Host Basketball Clinic

Free clinic gives MCC players a chance to teach younger girls.

Prior to their game against Judson University’s JV team, the Lady Scots basketball team hosted a free clinic Jan. 14.

The clinic involved the Marengo girls feeder program.

Scots’ coach Pam Mason said it was important to have her players help younger players to improve and learn the game.

“It’s always important to see our MCC players helping to instruct younger girls about the game,” Mason said. “That’s when I know they are understanding what I’m trying to teach them. It’s a great thing to have elementary-age youngsters come to MCC, see college players and get to know and interact with them. Then they stayed to watch our team play, which is also a great motivator for our players.

"I think it’s a great opportunity for us to get out in the community and let people know about an MCC program the girls can aspire to, so that in the future they might play college basketball here,” Mason said.

Mason continued by saying she was pleasantly surprised by how excited and motivated her players were regarding this free youth basketball clinic.

“I told them to be here at 9 a.m., for the 9:30 clinic, and I wasn’t sure how they would be since we also had a game today but since they got here, they have been working enthusiastically with the girls and doing more than me,” Mason joked.

The MCC players cheered and encouraged the young feeder team girls as they played an intra-squad scrimmage game at the end of the clinic. The girls were then treated to a pizza lunch as well as receiving MCC water bottles, mini-basketballs and a complimentary family season pass to all of the remaining Scots’ home basketball games.
