Gleixner, Central Pull Out Win at Jacobs

Prairie Ridge and Crystal Lake South lose on Tuesday afternoon.

For fans of Crystal Lake boys basketball, the only smiles came out in the last of three games at the Jacobs Holiday Classic in Algonquin on Tuesday.

Following losses by both Crystal Lake South and Prairie Ridge, the Crystal Lake Central Tigers held off St. Edwards to post a win.

coach Rich Czeslawski knew right away this was a trap game. All of his Tigers players could see Tuesday's foe from St. Edwards had been blown out in three games prior at the Jacobs Tourney before meeting Central on Tuesday. And there was his worst dreams coming true  when St. Ed's opened an 18-12 lead midway through the second quarter.

Matt Gleixner had 14 of his 18 points by halftime. Jake Chrystal scored all of his 15 points in the second half. CLC (9-2) went on a 17-3 run to close the first half and earned  a 67-56 win.

"We had good energy,'' Gleixner said. "But we didn't have good intensity. But then we started moving the ball better on offense.''

Gleixner had 7 of his points in the last 90 seconds of the second quarter.

"It was his turn today,'' Czeslawski said.

While Glexiner dominated action in the first half, Chrystal was scoreless.

"Chrystal felt out of place in the first half,'' Czeslawski said. "We got him the ball in the second half."

Chrystal's first two scores were a three-point play following a foul and a three-pointer.

The Tigers also had good efforts from John Nemcek (7 points) and Alex Polk (6 points).

CLC was expected to draw Chicago Hope at noon on Wednesday.

St. Charles North 54, Crystal Lake South 43

When you miss your first seven shots from the floor, it could be a tough afternoon.

(7-4) tasted defeat for the first time in the Jacobs Tournament when St. Charles North led start to finish to post a 54-43 win.

"We took some poor shots,'' said South head coach Dan DeBruycker. "We struggled putting the ball in the hole."

The North Stars raced to a quick 6-0 lead before Trevor Thompson brought his team back with a pair of drives to the hoop.

"He kept us in the game,'' DeBruycker said.

The Gators also got help from bench in the loss. Tyler Dawson ( 4 points) and Ryan Price (5 points) did all their scoring in the third quarter.

By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, the three-point shot of Kevin Rogers (13 points) began warming up. His fourth quarter three-pointer pulled the Gators within a single point at 43-42.  But that's as close as South would come.

Barrington 63, Prairie Ridge 30

Even the club from Marian Central is no slouch. That 9 a.m. foe on Wednesday for took a good Zion-Benton club to triple overtime before falling on Tuesday.

And so it goes for the Prairie Ridge Wolves (1-9). On a bank shot from Sean Valentine (12 points), the Wolves were within 18-14 late in the second quarter. But from that point, however, PR was outscored 45-16. Barrington landed five three-pointers in the 63-30 romp.

"This is what happens when you turn the ball over, can's score and don't rebound,'' said Prairie Ridge coach Corky Card. "We are just not playing very good basketball right now."

Prairie Ridge lost both Luke Lamar (5 points) and Nick Margiotta to fouls. James Stawarz added 5 points.

Card was looking forward to some days of practice to find some more points.

"We need to find the elixer,'' he said.
