Art of the Bicycle

 Art of the Bicycle, Saturday, July 14th at the Raue Center for the Arts

The Art of the Bicycle is an exhibition at the Raue Center for the Arts on Saturday, July 14th that presents over 30 custom and vintage bicycles chosen for their design excellence and artistic uniqueness.  The exhibit is presented by Wheel Werks Custom Bicycles of Crystal Lake.  Bicycling related art featuring paintings by Jeff Curtis Williams (Bicycle Times June 2012 cover) and Kara Ginther (hand carved Brooks Saddles) will also be displayed along side the bicycles.  The exhibit opens at 1:00 PM and runs for one day, closing at 9:00 PM.  A cash bar and refreshments will be available.  There is no admission fee.

The exhibition will cover a broad range of historic bicycles and materials including steel, chromoly, carbon fiber, titanium and bamboo.  Bob Olsen, owner of Wheel Werks Custom Bicycle, will also present his recent trip to Africa and the local production of bamboo bicycle frames.  Bob is a native Crystal Lake resident who started his bicycle adventures as a 15-year old touring with Race Across America and has now operated Wheel Werks Custom Bicycles on Main Street in downtown Crystal Lake for five years (www.wheelwerksbikes.com) .  Bob is known throughout Northern Illinois for his custom bicycle fittings and unsurpassed mechanical abilities.    

 

The Raue Center for the Arts is located at 26 N. Williams Street in historic downtown Crystal Lake, IL.   The exhibit opens at 1:00 PM and goes until 9:00 PM.  It is open to all ages and is free.  The Art of the Bicycle is co-sponsored by the Raue Center for the Arts and the 2012 Crystal Lake Night Owl Bicycle Ride.  The Crystal Lake Night Owl Bicycle Ride is Crystal Lake’s first overnight bike ride, starting at 12:01 AM on Sunday, August 5th.  Additional info at www.clnightowlride.org.
