Cary Trojans Fall in Summer League Play

Cary loses to Woodstock North and St. Edward during Crystal Lake Central summer league.

Tuesday night’s action in the Crystal Lake Central Summer League for Cary-Grove was interesting to say the least. The Trojans had to wait to begin their first game of the night after a window had been left open as the evening thunderstorms hit, allowing rain to shower down on the court.

When play did get underway, it was a rough night for C-G in losing to Woodstock North 42-30 and St. Edward 48-38.

The games were played with two 20-minute running-clock halves and also featured rules where players would shoot a free-throw and if made were awarded two points along with automatic three-point plays on baskets made while being fouled.

In the first game, Cary struggled out of the gate with a ten-point opening half in falling behind 19-10 to the Thunder.

Jake Bianchi helped Cary make a small comeback in the second half, scoring all seven of his team-high points after the break but it wasn’t enough as North pulled away in the end.

The Trojans started much stronger in the second game after trailing early to rally for a lead late in the first half but still trailed 28-24 at the break.

Ben Bradshaw led Cary with 13 points in the nightcap as the Cary offense sputtered in the last 20 minutes. Cary coach Ralph Schuetzle said that the summer league season is a place where you can gauge progress if you have all the players you need available.

“It’s important and it’s not important,” Schuetzle said. “It all depends on how many kids you have. If you have your full team, it will give you an idea of where you’re at. A lot of schools are maybe missing a lot of guys with football. We don’t have many football guys this year and we basically had everybody here.”

Schuetzle added that the fact that nearly his entire varsity roster is playing is something that will be big in the future.

“It’s important especially playing two games because we got Ben coming off a knee surgery and Eric Graham with some tendonitis issues. You can’t wear them down and get them re-injured,” Schuetzle said. “You got to have all your guys so they can learn and get their reps in. We played a weekend tournament where we played six games in two days. They’re hour games but that’s still a lot of basketball.”

Cary will continue summer league play Wednesday night in Crystal Lake at 7:15 p.m.
