Cary-Grove Tennis Earn Season-Opening Win

Michael Robinson gets win at No. 3 singles to clinch 4-3 win over Jacobs

One match to decide it all, that’s what Cary-Grove’s boys’ tennis team was faced with Thursday in their season-opener at Fox Valley Conference rival Jacobs.

With both teams tied with three wins on the day, it came down to the No. 3 singles match between the Trojans’ Michael Robinson and the Golden Eagles’ Siv Yeramati.

After losing the first set with both teams standing around watching, Robinson rallied to win the final two sets to come away with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win and give C-G a 4-3 victory to start the season.

Cary coach Amanda Schuetzle said it was good to see the junior come up with a pivotal win like that.

“I’m really proud of him, he had a long match. It’s the first match of the season and everyone comes in nervous,” Schuetzle said. “He stayed calm, played his game and pulled it out.”

No. 1 singles player Chris Federighi had no problem winning his opening match of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Brandon Sidor and said that he was a great opening match for him and he got some work in.

“It was a good warm-up and I don’t know the kid but he played pretty well given the circumstances,” Federighi said. “I didn’t expect the match I had. It was nice to get hitting in and stuff. I was very consistent and I knew if I could stay in the point that I could get the point. Consistency was the key today.”

Cary’s No. 3 doubles team of Thomas Carroll and Tony Gallo got a 6-3, 6-3 win over Vijay Radhakrishnan and Keegan Gaspari while No. 4 doubles Carsten Gallant and Joe Godawski took home a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sam Stevenson and Kyle Klatka. Schuetzle added that she was very excited about the potential her team has.

“We did better than I thought,” Schuetzle said. “Chris had a nice match out there and was happy he had a good first match. We are really focusing on the doubles. I know our singles is strong and our doubles did better than I thought we could do this first match. We have a lot of improving to do but there’s a ton of potential there.”

The Trojans will get back on the court Saturday morning at home in the Cary-Grove Invitational beginning at 8 a.m.
