Cary Girls' Splits in Summer League Finale

Trojans beat Prospect, fall to Streamwood to end summer season.

Wednesday night saw the end of the summer season for Cary-Grove’s girls’ basketball team. The Trojans finished their season going 1-1 in the Maine West Summer League in Des Plaines with a 38-36 win over Prospect and a 29-21 loss to Streamwood.

Cary opened the night with a rough outing against the Sabres, scoring just 13 points in the first half and trailing 17-13 at halftime and only managed eight more in the second half.

Coach Rod Saffert said that a lot of work still is needed before the beginning of the 2011-12 season.

“They know they have to personally get faster, quicker,” Saffert said. “Prospect had six kids but they’re quick and they handle the basketball and they want to drive, drive, drive, drive, drive and they can shoot the 3. It comes down to skill-wise that they have to do a lot of work on their own the next five months to make themselves better. It’s the defensive stuff that bothers me and I’m not even the defensive coach.”

Saffert said he is optimistic because he has a team that will be prepared when the time comes.

“They work hard, they are there all the time, at all the summer camp stuff we do,” Saffert said. “They listen really well, they all got the playbook. There is just so much new offensively but they’ll get it. They have that goal of winning conference, regional, whatever and going further. I know they’ll work at it.”

The season gets underway on Nov. 16 at the Lake Zurich Tournament.
