Cary Girls' Soccer Falls in Season Opener

Hughes scores lone goal in 2-1 loss to Hersey

On a cold, windy afternoon, Cary was able to score in the second half but it wasn’t enough in a 2-1 loss to the Huskies.

After falling behind 2-0, Beth Hughes scored a left-foot shot just under the crossbar with 15:39 to play to cut the lead in half.

Cary had a few chances in the last 30 minutes to tie the game but were unable to do so including a shot by Allie Simon that sailed just over the crossbar before the Hughes goal.

Cary coach Ray Krystal said it was a good game to start the season.

“It was an effort all the way out,” Krystal said. “It’s the girls’ first game out so there are a lot of positives and a lot to build on. That’s what it is, the season is a process. It‘s not the first game that‘s important. It‘s not where you start, it‘s where you end. A lot of quality soccer being played.”

Krystal added that there are some positives to take from the game.

“They’re communicating, they’re just not consistent with it,” Krystal said. “They’re finding each other and trying to play. We’re obviously not trying to create for an easy win, got to try to do things the right way.”

With two more games this week, an idea of how the team will be in 2011 can be established.

“Our expectations are simple, it’s just about progress,” Krystal said. “That’s what we are, just better than the day before.”

Krystal Felderman made four saves for Cary, who will play next on Thursday at home against Jacobs at 4:30 p.m. before traveling to Johnsburg on Friday afternoon for a Fox Valley Conference crossover game beginning at 4:30 p.m.
