Cary Athlete of the Week: Kevin Weber

The senior threw a complete game shutout in the regional championship for the Trojans.

Saturday was the Cary-Grove baseball team’s biggest game of the year to date, and the man responsible on the mound for getting that win was senior Kevin Weber.

Weber struck out seven and allowed just one walk to help the Trojans win the regional title. He is this week’s Athlete of the Week. Weber extended his streak of scoreless innings to 16 in throwing the complete game, a 9-0 win over Prairie Ridge on Saturday. Weber is 6-0 on the season with a 2.44 ERA. Weber said that some of the pressure on him eased off after a six-run third inning from Cary.

“It’s always easier to pitch with the lead because you know that one mistake and the game’s not over,” Weber said. “You have the ability to make a mistake. You just go out and throw strikes and not worry about one going over the wall.”

Weber added that winning the regional was nice, but there are bigger goals for the team.

“It’s great, but we kind of expected it though,” Weber said. “We had no other expectations besides winning a regional, so it feels good to come through. We have much higher expectations, and this is just a stepping stone.”

Weber and his teammates head into the DeKalb Sectional on Thursday afternoon facing an opponent they know a lot about in Dundee-Crown, which Weber faced May 12, his last game in which he gave up runs. Weber gave up four runs in seven innings, but D-C took home a 5-4 win in eight innings.
