A Look Back at Girls' Basketball 2010-11

Trojans finish 27-4 in senior season of Jakubicek, Straumann and Geegan

As the 2010-11 Cary-Grove girls’ basketball season went on, momentum continued to roll for a potential berth in the state finals and while the Trojans fell two steps short of state, the team saw many highlights including advancing to the program’s first sectional final in a decade and Claire Jakubicek breaking Eve Barry’s career .

Jakubicek broke Barry’s record of 1,232 points on Dec. 5 against Johnsburg and finished her Cary career with an even 1,700 points while averaging just under 20 points per game during the 2010-11 season as Cary finished at 27-4.

C-G also reeled off two double digit winning streaks during the season including a 14-game streak that ended in the sectional title game. The 55-53 in the sectional title game ended their careers of four-year varsity players Jakubicek and Meg Straumann.

During their four years, Cary went 101-19 with three conference titles and three regional titles. Jakubicek said after Thursday’s sectional title loss that it was a great experience.

“As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned a lot of things. I couldn’t have asked to end my senior year with this group of girls,” Jakubicek said. “It was such a team, I have never felt so close with girls and everyone wanting the same thing, being in it and working so hard no matter what the talent levels. Everyone tries their best 24/7. Even though it was a loss, we will be a team forever.”

Straumann said it was hard to put into words her thoughts about this season and last four.

“The overall feeling is proud. There is so much pride behind everything we have done,” Straumann said. “We’ve gained so much respect for this team and yet Cary-Grove itself. I feel like when teams look at Cary-Grove or see a jersey with Trojans across the chest, everyone is going to look at them in a new light and a new category. It’s a growing program and I wouldn’t be surprised in a couple of years that they win in the Sweet 16.”

Even with the graduations of Jakubicek, Straumann and Johanna Geegan, the cupboard is not bare going into next season with starters Paige Lincicum and Olivia Jakubicek returning along with occasional starter Joslyn Nicholson, Alyssa Lee and Jennifer Perkins.
