Goddard Students in Cary Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Students marched in parade with all recyclable instruments on Wednesday, March 28.

The is participating in a variety of earth-friendly activities this week for the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour, the world’s largest single campaign for the planet.

Earth hour begins by turning off your lights for an hour at 8:30 p.m. on March 31, in a collective display of commitment to a better future for the planet.

On Wednesday, students at Goddard School built instruments using recyclable items from home, to participate in the school’s Grassroots instrument parade, where students marched around the school playing their drums, guitars, French horns and rain-sticks.

Joanne Ziebell, director at the Goddard School of Cary, said students have been learning all week about the importance of conserving, recycling and re-using items. Students are learning on what they can do as children, by turning off the lights, Ziebell said.

“They’re really excited about it,” Ziebell said of the students.

“Stepping Up for the Environment” is the school’s themed program, which focuses on saving energy and protecting the environment. Kim Mitchem, owner of the Goddard School in Cary, said this is the fourth year the school has participated in the program.

Carrie Clodfelter, assistant pre-kindergarten teacher at the Goddard School, said her students were really creative with the instruments. Clodfelter said students worked with what they had at home and came up with most of the ideas.

About 100 students are participating in this week’s festivities, which range from Green Day, the Grassroots Instrument parade and concluding with the Fashion show on Friday, with clothing being made from recyclable materials.
