District 155 Adopts 2010 Levy

Levy reflects increase to property taxes

Community High School District 155 unanimously approved the passage of the 2010 tax levy at its Dec. 14 board meeting.

The levy reflects a 4.3 percent increase in the school district portion of property tax bills for residents of the district which includes , Prairie Ridge High School and Crystal Lake south and central high schools, but will likely yield 3.4 percent additional revenue.

Assistant Superintendent Business and Finance John Lutsch advised the increase would mean a homeowner with a $200,000 home would pay approximately $33 more next year over this year's tax bill. For the owner of a $300,000 home it would mean a $54 increase.

The funds brought in by the tax levy will fund the 2011- 2012 school year budget.

Lutsch advised that while the board approved the levy, modifications can still be made until March 1, 2011.

Board President Ted Wagner addressed audience members concerns about the rate increase and whether the district budget could be trimmed some to free up the funds the district needs rather than through taxes.

"As a board we are continuously reevaluating all the costs (in the budget)," he said. "This board does not spend money lightly. We're not happy the increase is happening at the rate it is either. No one wants to see that type of rate increase. Things are tough out there for all of us."
