D-26 Community Engagement Committee to Discuss Cuts, Negotiations

Potential cuts at the Cary School District 26 has sparked much conversation from the community.

Cary School District 26 Board of Education is facing a potential school closing by May 1 if negotiations aren't met between the board and the Cary Education Association.

To stay in the black, the district needs to cut at least $2.1 million before next school year and $5.5 million by 2015.

The board has said they are asking for $2.5 million in wage and benefit concessions from the teachers' union.

Kaiser conducted a poll on the "Cary Schools Solutions" facebook page.

A single question was asked during the poll: “How should District 26's Board of Education, administration and teachers deal with next year's fiscal challenges?” Below is the distribution of answers to the options that were provided:

A. "Tier 1"plan as described by the school district.  Primarily reliant on a less expensive teaches contract and would result in lower teacher compensation (salaries and/or benefits)
34
B. "Tier 2" plan as described by the school district officials, Primarily reliant on a school closure. Result will be similar compensation for remaining teachers, elimination of 16 teaching positions and higher class sizes.

C. Budget the next school year with a deficit. Do not reduce teacher pay, do not close a school. Likely result takeover by the state, loss of local control and possibly legislated tax increases.

D. I don't know enough about the situation to make a decision

E. I have a different solution.
