Crystal Lake's Lucas Urbanski Competes in National Spelling Bee Semifinals Thursday

Crystal Lake's Lucas Urbanski competed Thursday in the semifinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee but will not be among the 12 advancing to tonight's finals.

Urbanski did correctly spell two of his words during the semifinals: cataphora and  epixylous. Advancement to the championship finals was determined by the cumulative points a speller earned during both the preliminaries and semifinals, according to the National Bee website.

Urbanski, 14, has won the McHenry County Spelling Bee four years in a row, according to the Northwest Herald.
