District 155, Cary-Grove Honor National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists and Commended Students

Four seniors at Cary-Grove High School have been named National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists.

Community High School District 155 this year has four seniors named as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.

All four finalists hale from Cary-Grove High School.

On top of that good news: Cary-Grove has another seven students named as "commended" scholars. The news spells record breaker for the school, which had nine commended students (including three National Merit Scholarship semifinalists) last year.

"This is the most commended students Cary-Grove has ever had," Principal Jay Sargeant told the students. "And quite frankly, this is a very, very competitive class."

Sargeant held an honorary breakfast for all the 11 students Wednesday morning at the school.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is based upon PSAT scores. Students must achieve a 99 percent on the test in order to qualify for the honor.

Semifinalists must take the SAT and submit an application to continue the process. Finalists will be announced in February, and scholarship winners will be named in April.

Eight thousand National Merit Scholarships, worth about $35 million, will be awarded next spring.
