Cary District 26 To Vote On School Closing
In a effort to continue a balanced budget, Cary School District 26 may close a school to fill in the gaps.
Cary School District 26 Board of Education is holding a special board meeting to vote on closing a school and reducing staff.
The board has asked the teachers' union to take $2.5 million in wage and benefit concessions in order to make-up for the $2.1 million deficit for fiscal year 2012 but the vote to close a school and reduce staff is apart of the "Tier 2" reductions, which is the fallback plan, if an agreement isn't met between the district and the Cary Education Association.
District 26 has a five-year plan that outlines reductions of $5.5 million and is aiming to operate in the black by 2015.

The board will also vote on the 2011 fiscal year amended budget and go into a closed session to continue negotiations with the teachers union.
The Board of Education meeting will begin at 7 p.m. May 3, at the Cary Junior High School, 2109 Crystal Lake Road.

Superintendent Brian Coleman plans to present projections on how class sizes and staff assignments may look for the 2011-2012 school at tonight's meeting.
At the March 14 board meeting, Coleman presented possible scenarios if Briargate or Prarie Hill schools' were to close in the charts below.
However, these numbers are projections, which may change due to move-ins, move-outs and kindergarten sign-ups, which according to Coleman are the hardest predictor because parents may choose different options for their children's kindergarten.
