About 200 District 155 Teachers Attend Board Meeting in Midst of Contract Negotations

About 200 Community High School District 155 teachers attended the school board meeting on Tuesday night to show their support for their union president's stance at contract negotiations continue, the Northwest Herald reports.

The teachers' union contract expired in June, and teachers so far have decided to continue working while negotiations proceed rather than strike.

Education association president Justin Hubly said District 155's $1.8 million deficit in its operating fund is the result of cuts in state aid and a $1 million expense the board approved for materials and supplies last year. School Board members approved a budget for the upcoming year that assumes salaries will remain flat. However, if teachers receive even a 1-percent pay raise, it will push the district into a deficit, the Herald story states.
