Pingree Closed at Congress

Road construction to shut down Pingree at Congress intersection and north to railroad tracks.

Travelers will be looking for detours Tuesday morning when Pingree Road is closed down at the intersection at Congress Parkway.

The closure will start at Congress but move north on Pingree to the Union Pacific railroad tracks. Detours will be set up. Drivers are being asked to take Rout 31 or Main Street to bypass the construction. Access to Rickert Road will be open at Congress Parkway.

The completion pf the project is expected to be September 2012, although weather and utility work by ComEd, Nicor, Comcast and AT&T could push the completion back further.

Downtown Crystal Lake is now surrounded by construction, with the widening of the intersection of Walkup Road and Route 176 continuing. Crews have already cleared trees, and parts of yards, along Walkup.

"I am sickened by the near-term loss of so many beautiful, very old trees including ones in Veteran Acres," Kirk Johnson, a resident that lives near the intersection, wrote to Patch. "Not to mention the major road hassle coming our way. Those residents must be sick, having their land confiscated by the state and the curb lines moved in to their front stoops."

John Ambrose, with the Crystal Lake-based engineering firm Baxter and Woodmen Inc., said the Walkup project should be completed in the spring of 2013.
