McHenry County Reports First Case of Stomach Bug Illness

First case of stomach bug cyclospora illness reported in McHenry County.

McHenry County has reported its first case of the Cyclospora infection, the stomach bug illness that has thus far sickened 425 people throughout the country, the Daily Herald reports.

The news brings the total of Illinois' Cyclospora cases to five. In the McHenry County instance, the victim became sick the third week of July and did not require hospitalization, the Herald reports. An Illinois Department of Public Health spokesperson told the Herald health officials have not been able to link the Illinois illnesses to any specific food source.

An outbreak of Cyclospora infection has now expanded to 16 states.

In Iowa and Nebraska, the illness has been linked to bagged salad mix served at Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants, according to the Center for Disease Control website.

Since June 28, the federal Centers for Disease Control has been investigating an outbreak of Cyclosporiasis, a one-celled parasite that causes diarrhea, stomach cramps and other symptoms normally associated with a viral stomach bug.

So far, 24 of the 425 reported cases have required hospitalization for treatment, according to the CDC.
