LITH Trustee Wants Three Oaks Perks

Lake in the Hills Trustee Bob Huckins is suggesting residents be allowed to use Three Oaks for free in exchange for Crystal Lake residents getting to use Woods Creek Lake at a reduced price.

Lake in the Hills Trustee Bob Huckins is doing the spadework for a new era of cooperation between the village and the .

Huckins is asking the Crystal Lake City Council if Lake in the Hills residents could be admitted free to Three Oaks Recreation Area, an old 500-acre gravel pit. Crystal Lake residents get free admission to the area.

Under his proposal, Lake in the Hills residents also would be able to rent boats, kayaks and other watercraft at reduced rates.

It return, Crystal Lake residents would have access to the 56-acre Woods Creek Lake for $2. The nonresident fee is $5.

“I’d sure like to go fishing there,” Huckins said of the prospect of fishing at Three Oaks for free.

Crystal Lake City Councilman Jeff Thorsen and City Manager Gary Mayerhofer had no comment. Mayerhofer added he was waiting to see the proposal in writing.

Three Oaks Recreation Area is the result of decades of gravel mining on the property south of Northwest Highway. Mining operations exposed an aquifer, creating a vast lake. .

The lake at Three Oaks is stocked with bluegill, bass, muskellunge, northern pike and walleye.

Woods Creek Lake is a 56-acre lake created by a dam on Crystal Creek. It also is stocked with game fish. Paddleboats and kayaks are available for rent.
