McHenry County Ranks Among Healthiest Counties in Illinois

County Health Rankings released Wednesday ranked McHenry County as the 14th healthiest county in Illinois. 

While the rankings pointed to several positives within the county, it also indicated areas that need improvement.

In McHenry County, 27 percent of adults are considered obese. This is on par with the overall number of adults — 28 percent — that are considered obese in Illinois, according to the health rankings. 

Other findings show 21 percent of adults in the county smoke compared to 18 percent throughout Illinois. And 23 percent of adults are inactive in McHenry County while 21 percent are considered excessive drinkers. 

McHenry County ranked sixth for health behaviors and social and economic behaviors. The high school graduation rate for McHenry County residents is 91 percent while 10 percent of children live in poverty compared to 21 percent throughout the state of Illinois, according to County Health Rankings.

In the Chicago area, Kane Co. received a no. 9 ranking, DeKalb Co. ranked at No. 11, Lake Co. received a No. 13 rank, Will Co. received a No. 25 ranking and Cook Co. came in at No. 75. 

The County Health Rankings rank the overall health of nearly every county in all 50 states. The Rankings allow counties to see how well they are doing on 29 factors that influence health including smoking, high school graduation rates, employment, physical inactivity, and access to healthy foods. 

The fifth annual rankings were released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (UWPHI).
