Deadline Extended for Federal Flood Assistance

Residents and local small businesses may qualify for low-interest loans.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the registration deadline by 15 days to July 24 for federal assistance from the storms and flooding of April and early May.

FEMA also announced residents in two more Illinois counties are now eligible for assistance. Those counties are Putnam and Warren.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: For residents and business owners who sustained losses from the April 18 storm, tomorrow is the last day to apply for disaster aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

President Obama declared 11 Illinois counties as disaster areas, making federal funding available to affected individuals in McHenry, Lake, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Fulton, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, LaSalle and Will counties.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

There are three ways for individuals and business owners who sustained losses in the designated county to apply for assistance:

  1. Register online at http://www.DisasterAssistance.gov

  • Register with a web-enabled mobile device (such as a smart phone) at m.fema.gov

  • Call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or call TTY 1-800-462-7585; or for those who use Video Relay Service (VRS) or 711, call 1-800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (local time) seven days a week until further notice by FEMA.
