Chili Open Re-Scheduled; Ice Fishing Derby Cancelled

Drought, low lake water and lack of ice provide challenges for annual outdoor events.

Ice Fishing Derby

The ongoing drought has claimed yet another victim.

The Crystal Lake Anglers 40th Annual Ice Fishing Derby scheduled for Jan. 27, at 300 Lake Shore Dr., has been cancelled, according to the Crystal Lake Park District.

The derby was called off due to the low lake water conditions and logistical issues, according to Jenny Leech, public information coordinator for the park district.

The outdoor golf tournament, held on the icy course of Crystal Lake, will be held at Main Beach, 300 Lake Shore Dr., said Jenny Leech, public information coordinator for the Crystal Lake Park District.

The recent warm weather melted the course, and more time and cold temperatures are needed for the lake to refreeze. The good news is there's still time for participants to sign up.

Golfers will play a nine-hole, par 32 courses on frozen Crystal Lake. All foursomes will receive a great giveaway, one bowl of chili and chance to win several prizes, Leech said.

Prizes include various golf bags, golf clubs, golf apparel, and more. Decorate a sled and enter it in the Chili Open "Best Sled" contest for a chance to win even more great golf prizes.

Painted golf balls, prizes and side games are provided to all golfers.

Tee-offs begin at 8:00 am and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Cost is $115 per team (foursome), Leech said.
