County Transportation Survey includes North Algonquin Bridge Over Fox River

Transportation survey includes road, bicycle paths, bus routes, train service and the long-standing proposal for a second bridge over the Fox River north of Algonquin.

An online survey posted by the McHenry County Division of Transportation includes a proposal for a second bridge over the Fox River northeast of Algonquin.

The Transportation Needs of McHenry County 2040 survey asks residents to  review a list of proposed transportation projects and then rate their approval/ desire to see specific projects completed on a scale from 1 to 5 (from strongly disapprove to strongly agree).

The survey, aiming to project the transportation needs of McHenry County through 2040, includes road construction projects; proposed bike trails including paths along Route 14 in Crystal Lake and Randall Road in Algonquin; bus routes; and additional train routes, to name a few.

Discussion of whether to build a second bridge over the Fox River has been ongoing for years. The plans were essentially tabled when county officials opted for the Western Algonquin Bypass project, currently under construction west and parallel to Route 31 in Algonquin.

"Future traffic model results indicate a need for this crossing in addition to the Western Algonquin Bypass and the Longmeadow Parkway over the Fox River in Kane County," the county project description reads.

The second bridge project was included in the county's last transportation plan. An easement has been agreed upon by the McHenry County Conservation District and the county through the Fox Bluff District area, according to the county.

Additional right-of-way has been preserved between Lake Cook Road and River Drive, the county states.

Estimated cost of the bridge project is $63.1 million.
