Cary Trustee Aims To Bring Back Cary Arts Commission

The Cary Arts Commission could be another avenue for Cary students who may miss out art and music in school.

Cary Trustee Jeff Kraus began discussion about the Cary Arts Commission at the administration and development committee Tuesday night.

The arts commission was a group of community members planning art programs for Cary residents.

Kraus asked committee members if there was any funding in the budget to help out with groups such as the Cary Arts Commission.

Finance Director Ron Pfeiffer said the village does have an account for nominal funds but not for on-going projects.

Cary Trustee Rick Dudek said he supports the idea but wanted to see others with skin in the game.

Dudek proposed the idea of the village matching funds of an organization and possibly getting the business community involved.

"We need a better understanding of what the money will be used for," Cary Trustee Bruce Kaplan said.

"We are not in real good economic times," Cary Trustee Ray Chisholm said. "I don't think our expenses are going down anytime soon."

With art and music being cut from Cary District 26 schools, Cary Trustee Karen Lukasik said the village can at least support the idea.

Trustee Dudek said we shouldn't limit the arts commission to traditional art; maybe business owners can beautify their business with flowers or a new sign.
