Cary Operates Under Village Form of Government

Confusion about type of government cleared up at Tuesday's Village Board meeting.

At last week’s meeting, Mayor Tom Kierna suggested that the village operated under a mayoral form of government, or a strong mayoral form of government.

Village attorney Michael Coppedge clarified, saying that Cary operates under a village form of government led by a mayor and an elected board.

Under this form, the mayor has the power to appoint and remove administrators and officials. In that sense, it is a mayoral form of government, but it is properly classified as a Village form of government.

In reference to last week’s statement, Mayor Kierna said, “I misspoke. I apologize.”
