Biggest Gig Yet for Local Drummers

The Crystal Lake Strikers will be in a parade along Chicago's Michigan Avenue Saturday evening as part of The Magnificent Mile 2011 Lights Festival.

Mayor Aaron Shepley has been known to bang his own drum.

He plays bass drum and swings felt-headed mallets with gusto in a marching ensemble he helped form four years ago.

Shepley announced at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting that the drum line he created with Councilman Brett Hopkins and Thomas Kundmann will be behind the Mickey Mouse float, a highly visible position, in The Magnificent Mile 2011 Lights Festival Parade.

Shepley credits Hopkins with landing the gig.

“The Strikers are cool and a lot of fun,” Diana Kenney said. “They’re really highly energetic and entertaining. They are able to get a crowd into their performance.”

Kenney, executive director of the nonprofit , said the Strikers perform at many events, including last year's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago.

According to the City of Chicago’s website, the nationally televised parade, the biggest nighttime event of it kind, starts 5:30 p.m. and includes 30 floats, giant balloons, marching bands and celebrities. Following the parade will be fireworks along the Chicago River.
