Crystal Lake Police respond to a reported fight May 1 involving 15 to 20 people.

Two Crystal Lake men were arrested May 1 and another man hospitalized after Crystal Lake Police responded to a call of a fight involving up to 20 individuals in front of 148D Woodstock Street at about 2:02 a.m.

Ezequiel Del Angel, 33, of 160B Woodstock Street, Crystal Lake, was charged with felony aggravated battery (causing great bodily harm), felony aggravated battery (by use of a deadly weapon) and misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon. Del Angel was turned over to McHenry County Jail where he remains May 3 on $15,000 bond.

“The victim as of today is conscious and cooperating with the investigation,” said Deputy Police Chief Eugene Lowery. “He has given us his version of the incident.”

An investigation determined that Del Angel reportedly stabbed the victim. Police recovered a 10-inch kitchen knife with a serrated blade at the scene that is believed to be the weapon used in the incident.

Two other Crystal Lake men were treated and released for minor lacerations to their heads at Woodstock Memorial Hospital after reportedly being hit in the head by a metal scooter used as a weapon by an unknown combatant.

The cause of the fight is unknown, however Lowery said there was no indication it was a gang-related incident at this time. At least two of the people at the scene were family members.

According to the investigation, two individuals started fighting which touched off a group fight. When police arrived on the scene, people started running away, Lowery said.

Lowery said numerous police units responded to the call, along with an ambulance and fire truck from Crystal Lake Fire Rescue. A fire truck is always dispatched with an ambulance from the fire department as a matter of course, Lowery said, and in this case there was no fire.

“At this point in time the investigation remains ongoing,” Lowery said.
