A Cary man was indicted on 16 counts of charges, including solicitation to murder for hire, aggravated battery to do great bodily harm and aggravated battery with firearm earlier today in McHenry County Court.
Stanley J. Helmer, 58, of 6105 Miller Lane was charged March 18 with solicitation to commit murder after police say he tried to pay a man to have a former employer killed.
While Helmer was in jail regarding his solicitation charges, police say he solicited another inmate, offering him $1,000 to break the legs of the main witness in the first case.
According to McHenry County State Assistant Attorney Dave Johnston, the inmate immediately talked to law enforcement officials about details he and Helmer spoke about while in jail.
Helmer plead not guilty to all charges and his lawyer, Todd Cohen, said they are working on police reports to prepare for the next court appearance.
If convicted, Helmer could face up to 30 years in prison.
Helmer is set to appear in court at 9 a.m. July 6 in Woodstock.
