Unmarked Lake County Squad Struck By Train; Detective Uninjured

The crash occurred near Route 134 and Porter Road in Round Lake Park Monday night.

An unmarked Lake County Sheriff's Office squad car was struck by a train in Round Lake Park Monday night.

The detective who was driving the squad car was able to exit the vehicle to avoid injury.

The crash occurred at about 10:20 p.m. near Route 134 and Porter Road.

According to a press release from Sgt. Sara Balmes of the Lake County Sheriff's Office, the detective was driving an unmarked, black 2002 Honda Accord westbound on Route 134. He was approaching Porter Road when the railroad gates lowered.

When a white conversion van ahead of the squad stopped suddenly to turn left onto Porter Road, the detective applied his brakes and then swerved to the right to avoid hitting the van. The squad car stopped next to the railroad tracks and was stuck in the snow, Balmes said. The detective exited the squad car, which was then struck by a Metra train.

Balmes said while there were passengers on the train, no injuries were reported.
