Student Charged With Hate Crime, Aggravated Battery in Fight at Middle School

A fight that broke out between two students at Hannah Beardsley Middle School in Crystal Lake Monday has lead to felony juvenile charges against one child who police said fractured the other child's clavicles and made a "verbal reference to the victim’s national origin."

The child has been charged with aggravated battery and hate crime—both felony offenses.  The child was taken to the Kane County Juvenile Detention Facility pending a court hearing at a later date.

Police were called to Hannah Beardsley Middle School, 515 E. Crystal Lake Ave. in Crystal Lake, at 12:20 p.m. on Monday regarding the fight. Police learned the fight was isolated to the two students.

Police said one student tackled the other student and repeatedly struck the other child with their hands "seemingly without provocation," according to the news release. No weapons were involved.

Police learned on Tuesday the suspect in the case made the verbal reference regarding the victim's national origin just before the fight and confirmed the victim suffered fractured clavicles from the fight. At that time, an original charge of battery was then upgraded to felony charges of aggravated battery and hate crime, according to the news release.

The names of both the victim student and accused offender are not being released because they are both minors.

The title of the story should be , Liberal insanity runs amuck in simple bullying case !
bearluvin99 February 12, 2014 at 08:42 AM
Bullying is never "simple" and it does not break both clavicles and punch repeatedly
J C February 12, 2014 at 09:13 AM
Yeah and a fracture is not a break either.........Liberal insanity

Don't you think there is more to this story than the info so far. One child attacking one child and was strong enough to fracture the clavicle? Lots more to this story. Could have been a two way street only the victim could have been a verbal bully. Takes a lot of strength to fracture a clavicle and what would bring out such fury in a child if it is so??? A hate crime???? This doesn't apply to children in this type of scenario. Lets just cut his head off and get it over with or maybe when cooler heads prevail find out what really happened. Sounds like the school is afraid of being sued for not monitoring.

This is from the article in the Northwest Herald "he said the other student put him in a headlock and slammed him onto the ground before delivering some punches."

Very well could have happened. But as everyone knows you can have 10 people view an accident and each one will have a different version of the story. They need to get down to the nitty of that situation. I just hate (yep I said hate) it when the peripherals are broadcast on issues with children. Wait for the full and complete story so injurious rumors are not started.

What is wrong with you people??? A little boy was violently attacked because of his nationality and you are blaming the liberal agenda? Shame on you! The kid who did the attacking is just a kid, but should still be held responsible for his actions. As should the parents of the kid who clearly aren't parenting.

Two boys lives will never be the same after this incident.
maggie February 12, 2014 at 01:53 PM
Oh Colleen take a chill pill. You don't know the facts or if he was attacked because of his nationality!!!! This is how lives get ruined. Like I said you would be the first to cut off his head. Give it a rest until all the facts are accumulated then you can be shocked and appalled.
ColleenM February 12, 2014 at 02:00 PM
Because me saying he deserves to be held accountable means the death penalty. He needs to learn a lesson. Regardless if it was race oriented a kid has a broken collar bone because of another one. That right there is room for a wakeup call for those parents. And what facts are you looking for? Someone to say that boy didn't make those comments? Children are some of the most honest human beings on this planet. If a child overheard the fight and that was what they heard, I don't need any other proof.

Children can also be prolific story tellers. So you're the judge jury and executioner huh? Arm chair justice is profoundly blind. Your a scary person Colleen.

Colleen has a right to her opinion just like everyone else. I may not agree with what she says but I will defend her right to say it.

this was at my school!!!! its sad tho. :'(
Bob Taylor February 13, 2014 at 07:05 AM
Hopefully, the youth held in a juvenile facility will get a lesson in what real bullying is.
Heather A February 13, 2014 at 12:26 PM
Some of the comments above are the reason we still tolerate bullies. IMO there should be ZERO tolerance in the community for ANY acts of violence against one another. Unfortunately, the previous opinions will remain "let's wait and see what happens" until it happens to someone they love.
maggie February 13, 2014 at 12:27 PM
PRW: Yes she does, but you are the first to condemn a child for possibly voicing his opinion? It is off the wall comments like hers and those of Mr. Taylor that start a snowball of rumors. The way I hear it, this was the conclusion of an argument that has been brewing between these two boys for quite some time. NOT NECESSARILY BULLYING. And any name calling may have occured in the heat of the moment. Bet neither of you ever did such a thing right? So Bob you wish that harm comes to this child because it just may be that he lost his temper? Again I bet you never did such a thing! You are the big people..... "the adults" ..... You don't know that the parents are not parenting for a fact Colleen! Yet you are ready to condemn them from thin air but yes that's your opinion, and you have every right to air it. That a child would get so angry is sad because children should never have to go there. They are suppose to have guidance and intervention from the "Big People" Someone who can teach them the best reaction to an action. What comments to value and what to disguard. And how not to stir-up a bad situation into a a truly difficult situation. YES, we all have the right to voice our opinions I just wish a good number of us could apply some intellectual forethought to them before letting them land helter skelter. Everything as first stated just may be true but we don't know that at this time. Hopefully if it is there will be someone that can step in and help not just condemn.
CLSmom February 13, 2014 at 12:45 PM
This is not a hate crime. Do any of you folks know the boys involved? Bob - there are all kinds of bullying.... and the "victim" here is a prime example. I hope he also learned a lesson! As to how far he can push people. These charges will be dropped or lessened once the authorities investigate.

Here's my question ??? Who runs to the media with such things involving children ?? It's hard enough to be a child in today's society ... We do not need to make preconceived judgments without all the facts !!!!
