Sheriff Arrests Richmond Men on Weapons, Drug-Related Charges

McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren said officers from the Narcotics Unit seized five handguns, $23,141 in cash and about $56,460 worth of marijuana.

Two Richmond men were arrested earlier this week for weapons and multiple drug-related charges.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit, which includes officers from the Lake in the Hills Police Department, conducted a joint narcotics investigation with the Palatine Police Department and the Illinois State Police North Central Narcotics Task Force (NCNTF).

On Monday, May 6, members of the county's SWAT team, Narcotics Unit, K-9 Unit, and NCNTF conducted a search warrant at the address of 9702 N. Clark Rd. in Richmond, according to a release issued by Sheriff Keith Nygren.

During the execution of the search warrant, one of the residents was arrested for multiple drug charges and weapons offenses. The second resident was arrested two days later after investigators obtained an arrest warrant for him, Nygren said.

As a result of the search warrant, deputies seized five handguns, brass knuckles, switchblades, about 2,823 grams of cannabis (6.2 pounds), three digital scales, packaging materials, and $23,141, according to the release.

Nygren estimates the street value of the cannabis to be approximately $56,460.

According to the press release, the two men arrested were charged with the following offenses:

Gregory Cantu, 47, 9702 N. Clark Road, Richmond.

  • Unlawful possession of cannabis with intent deliver (Class 1)
  • 3 Counts unlawful possession of cannabis (Class 2)
  • Unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia (Class A)
  • Unlawful use of a weapon (Class A)
  • Unlawful possession of a firearm without a FOID (Class A)

Cantu's bond was set at $70,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m.
May 29.

  • Unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver (Class 1)
  • Unlawful possession of cannabis (Class 2)
  • Unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia (Class A)

Bond for the younger Cantu was set at $80,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. May 29.
