Police: Overcrowding, Underage Drinking Not a Problem at Three Oaks

Officials say underage drinking is under control at Three Oaks Recreation Area.

Three Oaks Recreation Area opened for the season April 9 and appears to have become a destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Deputy City Manager Eric Helm said there have been large crowds at the park, but discounted rumors that the park was limiting the number of people allowed into the area due to overcrowding.

“Define overcrowding,” he said. “It’s a park. It’s summer. There’s going to be a lot of people.”

The beach recently opened for swimming, which he said may have attracted more  visitors.

Reports of underage drinking have been addressed by the department as well as the Crystal Lake Police Department, he said.

“The underage drinking incidents have been few and far between,” Helm said. “It’s not an issue most people see. When our staff identifies that, we involve law enforcement.”

Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Eugene Lowery said there have been a few reports of underage drinking. Those incidents have not necessitated increasing the number of officers stationed there thus far.

“We will provide additional staffing as required,” he said.
