Crystal Lake Police Investigate Death of LITH Teen

A teenage girl died Sunday in a home on Grand Canyon Circle in Crystal Lake.

The Crystal Lake Police Department is investigating the death of a teenage girl that occurred at a home in the 600 block of Grand Canyon Circle on Sunday, March 10, 2013, according to the Northwest Herald.

The teen who died was Stephanie Chiakas, of Lake in the Hills, the NWH reports. Chiakas was a junior at Crystal Lake South and did not live at the Grand Canyon Circle home.

District 155 Spokesman Jeff Puma said Crystal Lake South High School has counselors, social workers, and a school psychologist available to provide support to students.

"The crisis team met Sunday night and was prepared to offer this service on Monday morning when school resumed," Puma said. "The team also sent out an email to parents that included information about this support and some other service organizations that exist in our area"

In the e-mail notification, Crystal Lake South Principal Marsha Potthoff and Student Services Coordinator Joshua T. Nobilio stated:

"We are saddened to inform you that one of our students passed away Sunday morning. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends who are personally affected."

The e-mail went on to say school officials are limited in the amount details they could release about the girl's passing. Late Sunday night, Crystal Lake Police Cmndr. Dan Dziewior stated the department would not be releasing the girl's name and details because she is minor.

"Please understand there are legal limitations to the details we may share at this time regarding this student’s passing," Potthoff's e-mail stated. "We are working with the Crystal Lake Police Department and other local agencies, and will make adjustments to the supports we offer based on their investigation’s findings."

Friends of the student have created a Facebook page in her memory entitled "RIP Stephanie Chiakas."

I don't understand. CL Police Cmndr. Dan Dziewior said they would not be releasing the name because she is a minor yet this minor's name appeared in the Northwest Herald and again, in this article. Was it because the family had yet to be notified or...?

I hope the girl's family find the strength to see them through this sudden, painful journey. Life will never be the same.

Denise, the police did not release her name. (the NWH article does not state the girl's identity was given to them by the police). Many people were aware of this young girl's passing by Sunday - through word of mouth, Facebook posts, etc. In particular, families from the CL South High School community knew about it and shared the information with Patch. We at Patch chose not to post her name until her passing was confirmed by the obituary notice.

What exactly do the police need to pay attention too? What are the details you apparently know behind this girls death? In most cases, it is the parents, friends, and community that need to open their eyes and pay attention.

Sit outside 7-11 by Crystal lake south high school during lunches or after school. See how many drug deals go on. Everyone needs to open their eyes not only parents but police do too

Thank you, Stephanie! I do realize The Patch was not the one to initially release her name. I was just trying to figure out the logistics between the PD commentary and the NWH article release. I appreciate your response!

There was a drug bust at that 7-11 a couple of years ago, I read about it in the Tribune, although the Trib did not mention South High School nearby but that it was near a church. And there is also drug activity behind the church in that area, needles have been found. Along with empty beer and liquor bottles.

So you're saying that this girl might've overdosed?
Anonymous March 13, 2013 at 05:37 pm
Heroin is fastly growing addiction in this town the police need to take a little less time busting kids with a little pot an dig a little deeper and find the people who are selling the dope in this Aera it's fastly widespreding beleave me or don't beleave me but I no my facts right I see it with my own eyes
Anonymous March 13, 2013 at 05:55 pm
Yes, that is true. Heroin has become a big problem in crystal lake and many young kids have started using, parents watch your children's behavior, if they were part of "the crew" talked about in her obituary, they most likely are doing heroin sad but true. The source of the heroin shouldn't be hard but police are too busy with a little bit of pot instead of this drug who is killing our children

And yes. She overdosed

Thank you to all that have spoken up on the truth about this issue. Parents are not to blame all of the time. If parents can not get any help from the police on keeping these kids "safe" in any situation whether it be from drugs to bullying and this is their FULL TIME PAID Career, how can we work together to save lives. Life is hard enough for so many of these young adults they do not need to have temptations and any time of their life to mingle in the "wrong crowd" or to be depressed because of any unnecssary bullying etc.. We have police placed inside some schools for a reason, with all of these deaths, makes you wonder if it is making a difference? I truly believe teaching begins at home. I also believe that once you choose to become any type of public figure, you become a "parent" in a sense to many and all. I think that some of today's teachers, are way too young. Not all, but some, are not seasoned enough to handle some of the issues these young adults have on their hands. They are supposed to be a Teacher, not a Friend in the literal meaning. I have seen a lot and enough to voice my opinion. My wish is that other's start paying more attention to what is really going on around them everyday. I will continue to pray for our youth of today and for the parents today and to be....Peace

FYI: CL Police Chief David Linder (who retired in December) recommended the city adopt an ordinance amendment that would allow officers to issue tickets to people caught with small amounts of pot- thereby relieving officers of the lengthy arrest process needed to take someone back to the station, book, fingerprint them, etc. This would have enabled officers to spend more time in the street. The amendment was tabled as some city council members didn't like it. Soooo, don't blame police officers for "being busy with a little bit of pot." It's their job.....

Must be the blacks bringing that stuff to our kids. How can we keep them out of our neighborhood? O, wait, there are no blacks in our neighborhood . Hmmmm? Could we maybe take a look at our own self indulgent lifestyles? Big house, big cars, look at what we have!!! iPhones for middle school kids...no discipline, the wrong type of attention, and more than ever, the adults who stock their homes with liquor and have so called "dinner parties" every weekend. Don't blame the cops, teachers, etc. look within the homes of the adults who allow their teenagers to do what the hell they choose to do. Personally, I think parents should be held more accountable for the actions of their children. Btw, where were the owners of this house that she died in? They should be held accountable as well as the other kids who were there. Finally, it's not just the inner city, lower socio economic individuals who should not have kids, many suburban individuals are just as negligent at raising their kids. Money only hides the problem for a short while, eventually the truth comes out. It all starts at home and ends at home.

Buckwheat, you're an idiot. Big House? Big Car? It seams to me that you are just another liberal communist a-hole who doesn't want ANYONE to have more than your ghetto as$ has. Go worship your little Obama shrine and leave this family alone. Drug abuse and addiction is a deep subject that your socialist retarded melon head can't comprehend.

This is such a tragedy that there is another young child dead because of this horrible drug! I lost my brother to a Heroin OD 4 years ago and unless you go through it, most people don't know about it or get involved. I live around Crystal Lake and since my brothers death, I've become involved in many groups who are out there to try and raise awareness of Heroin and the dangers that go along with it. I've spoken to High School students, parents and college kids. The Roosevelt University has a group that is fighting to stop this horrible EPIDEMIC. The Robert Crown Center in Hinsdale is also doing their part with putting together a pilot program that teachers can use as a separate learning plan to teach kids about Heroin. I know these things because I'm involved in them. We are trying to do everything possible to get people educated and one of the main people who need to be ARE THE PARENTS. You can't just say, "Say no to Drugs" anymore. You have to learn the dangers of what they will do to you. That, if you try Heroin, there is a high chance you will become addicted to it. You might just snort it at first. Then comes the dependency on it and you need it all the time to not feel "sick", then you injecting it, then the lie & steal so you can pay for your habit cause you lost your job. Then comes jail because you steal. Then rehab, then maybe your clean for a little bit but you relapse cause that's what happens. Then you die. That's the typical life of a Heroin addict!

All of these comments and no mention of why our government has done very little to stop the cartels from bringing these drugs over the border to our kids. Not just Obama, over the past 50 years. We have the biggest baddest Armed Froces in the world, yet for some reason, we don't take care of our backyard.
Stop the source, educate the kids and hold everyone responsible. Unfortunately, the source isn't the kid selling in front of the 7-11 and people don't get involved or take responsibility, until it's their kid or relative. When did we become so busy, that everything is someone else's responsibility? I don't know this family, but God Bless them, I can't imagine what they are going through. I hope one of them becomes involved and makes a difference for at least one other kid in the CL area.

WOW- A DEAD NUTS COMMENT FROM SOMEONE WHO HAD THE B_ _ _ _ TO PUT THE TRUTH IN WRITING FOR ALL OF US TO PAINFULLY SEE! YOUTH TODAY HAVE A SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT, I HAVE WATCHED IT EVOLVE FOR YEARS. RON PAUL- YOUR INSULTS AND FOUL MOUTH ARE FURTHER PROOF ,( AND ENCOURAGEMENT) FOR THIS TO CONTINUE. NO ONE WANTS THIS FAMILY TO BE DENIED THEIR GRIEF BUT NEITHER SHOULD THE REAL ISSUE BE SKIRTED AROUND. TOO MANY PARENTS ARE FLAT OUT TOO BUSY OR SELF ABSORBED TO ACTUALLY SEE THEIR CHILDREN'S WORLD COMING DOWN AROUND THEM. OPEN YOUR EYES, THE SIGNS ARE THERE, IF YOU DON'T SEE THEM, THEN YOU'RE NOT LOOKING. I AM NOT SOME KNOW-IT-ALL SMART A_ _ , I AM A 56 YEAR OLD WITH 6 CHILDREN, ALL OF WHOM TRIED AT SOME POINT OR ANOTHER TO PULL THE WOOL OVER MY EYES. IF YOU KNOW YOUR KIDS, YOU KNOW WHEN THEY ARE LYING. RULE # 1 - KNOW YOUR KIDS! TAKE THE TIME, STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE MATERIALISTIC WORLD THAT HAS OBSESSED YOU.
