Murder Charges Filed in Fatal Crash

Luis Ramirez arrested after his attempt to pass two vehicles resulted in Sonia Hume's death.

A 22-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly killed a woman while attempting to pass two cars on Tryon Grove Road.

Luis Ramirez of Round Lake Beach was arrested on charges of reckless homicide and first-degree murder after a crash that claimed the life of Sonia Hume.

According to the , Ramirez was driving a 1997 Ford Expedition at 7:17 a.m. Aug. 5 westbound on Tryon Grove Road, less than a mile east of Barnard Mill Road, when he collided head-on with a Mitsubishi driven by Hume. Ramirez was attempting to pass two vehicles when he collided with Hume, a 38-year-old Woodstock resident.

Hume was pronounced dead on the scene and Ramirez was transported to in McHenry, where he spent a week receiving medical treatment.

According to the sheriff's office, seat belts were used by each driver and air bags were deployed because of the crash.

Ramirez is in custody of the McHenry County Correctional Facility. Bond has been set at $1 million. A court date has not been set.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office Traffic Crash Investigation Unit conducted and recently finished its investigation of the crash.
