Motorcyclist Killed in Rte. 176 Crash

The Thursday afternoon accident diverted traffic on Rte. 176, west of Rte. 14.

A 54-year-old Marengo man was killed Thursday after his motorcycle collided with a car on Rte. 176.

John C. Winkelman died from injuries he sustained in a crash where the 2007 Harley-Davidson Motorcycle he was driving was struck by a 2000 Chrysler Concorde.

According to , Winkelman was traveling westbound on Rte. 176 shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday when the Chrysler traveling south on Mt. Thabor Road, driven by a 27-year-old Woodstock woman, collided with his motorcycle while attempting to turn east onto Rte. 176. Winkelman was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

According to police, the initial investigation showed the Chrysler did stop at the posted stop sign.

and Crystal Lake Police Departments both responded to the crash scene where Winkelman was transported to Centegra Memorial Medical Center in Woodstock where life-saving attempts were unsuccessful.

The driver of the Chrysler suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital as well, according to police.

Traffic heading west on Rte. 176 was diverted either south or north on Briarwood for nearly three hours as the on-scene investigation was conducted.

This matter remains under investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department and the McHenry county Coroner’s Office.
