Local Man, 20, Killed After Falling Off Golf Cart

Alcohol use is suspected to be a contributing factor in the incident, which occurred early Sunday.

A 20-year-old Harvard man was killed early Sunday after police said he fell out of the back of a golf cart.

Stephen W. Canfield was riding in the 1996 Ingersoll Rand Club Car golf cart while traveling south on Johnson Road north of Route 173 in unincorporated Hebron Township when he fell off at 12:06 a.m. Sunday, according to a McHenry County Sheriff's Office press release.

He was a back seat passenger in the golf cart at the time of the incident.

The golf cart driver, Tyler Tikk, 21, of Alden, and other two passengers, Jacob Walters, 20, of Harvard, and Zak Olson, 21, of Hebron, were not injured in the incident.

Canfield was taken to Centegra Memorial Hospital in Woodstock where he was pronounced dead at 1:25 a.m. Autopsy results released Monday showed Canfield died of a broken neck, according to a McHenry County Coroner's Office press release.

Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in the incident. Toxicology results are still pending.

The vehicle was not equipped with seat belts and no occupant was wearing a helmet.

The crash is still under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
