Funeral Services, Visitation Set for John Larimer

Public visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Davenport Family Funeral Home. The funeral will be private.

 

After several days of waiting, the Crystal Lake family of John Larimer has finally been able to make funeral arrangements for the young serviceman. 

U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class John Larimer, 27, died Friday, July 20, in Aurora, Colorado.

Public visitation for Larimer will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 27, at , 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. (Route 176), Crystal Lake.

Funeral services and interment will be private.

Larimer was one of 12 people killed during a massacre at the Century 16 Movie Theater. The alleged gunman, James Holmes, 24, dressed in combat gear, kicked in the back door of the theater and began shooting.

In all, 58 people were injured in the attack.

Larimer was a 2003 graduate of Crystal Lake South High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 2011, and was assigned to Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Col. in October 2011.

He became a  cryptologic technician — a job the Navy says on its website should be filled by someone with "exceptionally good character, above-average writing and speaking skills, a good memory, curiosity and resourcefulness," according to Legacy.com 

"A valued member of our Navy team, he will be missed by all who knew him. My heart goes out to John's family, friends and loved ones, as well as to all the victims of this horrible tragedy," said Cmdr. Jeffrey Jakuboski, his commanding officer, in a written statement. 

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked donations be made to the John T. Larimer Memorial Fund in care of Citibank, 225 W. Virginia Ave., Crystal Lake, according to
