Free Gun Locks Available at Cary Police Department

Residents must present a valid firearms owner ID to receive a gun-lock.

The free cable style gun lock program is underway and Cary Residents are able to get them free of charge.

"Gun safety is an important project we want to take on," Cheif Steve Casstevens said at the regular Cary Village Board meeting on Dec. 6.

About 300 gun-locks have been donated to the department and a dozen has been given away so far, Casstevens said.

The locks can be used on virtually any style of gun - handgun, rifle or shotgun.

According to recent data by the National Safety Council, there are over 600 accidental shootings in the home every year. Additionally, there are over 17,000 suicides, many of those attributable to access to handguns in the home.

Cary residents can stop at the Police Department and sign out a maximum of three gun locks per residence. Residents are required to present a valid Illinois Firearms Owner ID (FOID) card before the gun locks will be issued.

Residents are not to bring any weapons with them to the Police Department.

The gun locks have been provided to the Police Department at no cost by the Department of Justice as part of their Project ChildSafe Program.
