Original article posted Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012:

An Elgin man was killed Tuesday night and his daughter listed in critical condition after their motorcycle was struck by a Jeep Liberty at the intersection of routes 176 and 47 in Lakewood.

Christopher J. Ludovice, 54, and his 16-year-old daughter were riding a Suzuki motorcycle and traveling southbound on Route 47 at about 8:53 p.m. Tuesday.

The traffic signal was green for Route 47 traffic when a Jeep Liberty driving northbound on Route 47 attempted to turn left (west) on to Route 176, Lakewood Police Chief Larry Howell said.

The driver of the Jeep, William A. Cizek Jr., 49, of Harvard, struck the motorcycle while attempting to make the turn. Cizek was cited for making an improper lane turn, Howell said.

Neither Ludovice nor his daughter - who were both thrown from the motorcyle upon impact - were wearing helmets, Howell said. Ludovice died from injuries sustained in the crash. His daughter was transported to Centegra Hopsital in Woodstock, where she remains in critical condition.

The accident remains under investigation, Howell said.

Lakewood Police, Lakewood Fire Department and the McHenry County Sheriff Department responded to assist with the incident.
